History and Comedy Converge on the Cervantes Institute Cinema Screen in Cairo

Written By: Aya and alkhalek

The Cervantes Institute in Cairo will host two distinguished cinematic events on Tuesday, November 5, and Thursday, November 7, at its headquarters. The first event, organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Chile, will feature the screening of the film “Best Enemies” on November 5. The second event, part of the Open Air Cinema program, will present the film “At Full Speed: Destination Asturias” on November 7. Both films will be screened in Spanish with English subtitles.

The screening of the film Mi mejor enemigo  “My Best Enemy,” directed by Alex Bowen, is organized in collaboration with the Chilean Embassy in Cairo, and will be attended by a delegation from the embassy and representatives from the Cervantes Institute. “My Best Enemy” is a feature film co-produced by Spain, Argentina, and Chile. The film’s narrative is based on the Beagle Conflict—the border dispute between Chile and Argentina in December 1978. It portrays the tension and near outbreak of war between the two military dictatorships of Pinochet and Videla. The film critiques the conflict between the neighboring countries, highlighting the subsequent abandonment of soldiers after the conflict’s resolution, and sheds light on the absurdity of wars and extreme militarism.

In the same week, the film A todo tren. Destino Asturias “Full Speed. Destination Asturias,” which concludes the Instituto Cervantes’ open-air cinema season, will be screened. This film, directed by and starring Santiago Segura, one of the most prolific figures in contemporary Spanish cinema, showcases his unique talent in creating memorable roles and characters in modern Spanish comedy. The movie follows a journey undertaken by a group of children on their way to a summer camp.

These two events are part of the film screening program, organized in collaboration between the Cervantes Institute and the embassies of Spanish-speaking countries in Egypt. Tuesday’s event will feature a delegation of representatives from the Chilean Embassy and the Cervantes Institute team in Cairo. Thursday’s event will take place in the Cervantes Institute garden, as part of the “Open Air Cinema” program, which showcases prominent cinematic works produced by Spain and Spanish-speaking countries in recent decades.
