Egyptian schools have taken pioneering steps in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and social media into education to enhance student focus and wellbeing, through two research projects supported by the British Council.

At Ramses College for Girls in Cairo, Principal Hala Tewfik launched a school-wide initiative guiding students on responsible digital tool and social media use, alongside psychologist-led workshops to strengthen cognitive health and teacher training on AI-supported lesson design. Results showed that 100% of students increased awareness of how social media affects focus and memory, while 90% reported learning useful academic content through these platforms.

At Salahaldin International School in Alexandria, academic lead Mustafa Atas focused on the impact of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) on student performance and classroom climate. Findings showed a 25% increase in student participation, a 30% reduction in classroom conflicts, and improved confidence and academic performance for over 70% of students.

Ammar Ahmed, Exams Director at the British Council Egypt, said: “These studies demonstrate that emotional development and digital literacy go hand in hand to create confident, balanced learners, with an impact extending across the whole school community.”

These initiatives are part of 12 teacher-led studies worldwide, funded by the British Council’s Action Research Grants Programme 2025, aiming to advance AI integration, digital wellbeing, and inclusive education globally.
