Olise Shines with First France Hat-Trick as Les Bleus Defeat Northern Ireland 3-1

KHADAMATY-NEW

Michael Olise delivered a standout performance with his first international hat-trick as France defeated Northern Ireland 3-1 in Lille, providing the perfect send-off for Didier Deschamps in his final home match as Les Bleus manager before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In France’s last warm-up fixture before traveling to the United States, Olise proved decisive against a determined Northern Ireland side that frustrated the hosts for long periods despite the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the occasion.

France struggled to convert their dominance into clear chances during the opening half, eventually breaking through just two minutes before the interval. Olise reacted quickest after Ousmane Dembele’s effort was deflected into his path, calmly finishing to give the hosts a deserved lead.

The Bayern Munich winger doubled France’s advantage shortly after the restart with a superb strike from the edge of the penalty area, powering the ball into the top corner and easing the pressure on the home side.

Northern Ireland, however, refused to fade away. Michael O’Neill’s youthful team, which started with an average age of just 22.6 years, earned a lifeline in the 64th minute when Patrick Kelly finished from close range after an impressive run by Shea Charles.

Mbappe Denied as Olise Completes Hat-Trick

Kylian Mbappe came close on several occasions as he pursued the goal that would move him level with Olivier Giroud as France’s all-time leading scorer. The French captain had one effort ruled out for offside and missed several other opportunities throughout the evening.

With 15 minutes remaining, Olise settled the contest in style, curling a magnificent effort from 20 yards into the net to complete his hat-trick and seal a memorable victory.

Emotional Farewell for Deschamps

The match carried added significance as it marked Deschamps’ final game on home soil after 14 years in charge of the French national team. Before kick-off, supporters paid tribute to the veteran coach during a special pre-match ceremony at Lille’s Decathlon Arena.

France’s star-studded attack, featuring Mbappe, Dembele, Désiré Doué and Olise, initially struggled to find rhythm despite their combined club tally of 97 goals last season. Yet Olise’s clinical finishing ultimately proved the difference.
